COVID is the driver here.

If not for COVID would the pandemic ever have been recognized? SARS COV-2 would have just been another typical influenza, targeted for next years flu shot.

The fact is the only people we are saving by wearing masks (maybe) are the ones that still aren't vaccinated for COVID, or the ones that the virus will kill anyway due to other circumstances beyond our control. And if masks are effective at all they simply delay our journey to herd immunity and give the damn bug more time to mutate and circumvent the vaccines. Honestly I think we should take the masks off and let COVID have it's run. At least that way the whole pandemic will be over sooner.
